More than just an author I enjoy reading, Elle is also one of the people I credit with motivating me to write my own book. For me, she's been an inspiration, a cheerleader, and a friend. I can't even begin to tell you how excited I am that, when The Telepath Chronicles releases next week, a short story I wrote will be in there with one of hers.
Now, for the part you really want to read :) Here's Elle...
Let The Bad Guy Win In The End, Pretty Please?
I recently realized that I’m not the only one out there who wants the bad guy to win sometimes. My ten-year-old watched that movie recently, and I caught her rewinding one scene over and over to watch it again and again. It’s the one where David Bowie is walking around with the girl in a never-ending maze of staircases, singing to her, trying to tempt her into staying with him. Sexy even to a ten year old. Maybe it’s genetic. But then again, it is David Bowie. A girl can only be so strong.
I read a book once, I cannot remember the name of it for the life of me, where the bad guy was this cruel overlord who ruled the planet with ruthless violence. He ate people when he was hungry, he took down entire villages with fire and brimstone. He was a real ball buster of a villain. You never even got to see what he looked like, he was that much of a monster. He was more an evil presence than an actual person (Satan, anyone?) He took the (beautiful) main character captive and dragged her along his murderous path, and she fought him with everything she had. He was intrigued by her gumption (because anyone else with a brain quaked in their boots whenever he was around) and started to pay more attention to her. One thing led to another and he offered her the queenship. She accepted on the condition that he stop eating people and quit being a jerk. He accepted.
Oh, the joy! Oh, the rapture! That book was frigging awesome, because it was the first high fantasy novel I read where the horribly awful villain was actually sexy (even though he was terrible, terrible) and he was changed by the love of a good woman. I know. Ridiculous. But I loved it anyway.
True Blood is a huge hit now. It started as the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris. Who wins in that story? Eric Northman! Yes! Blood-sucking vampire? Check. Murderer? Check. Ruthless? Check. Asshole of the highest degree? Check and check! I was thrilled when Sookie fell for him. I probably have something seriously wrong with me, but did you see him sitting in that chair ruling his district? Oh, baby. I did.
One of these days I’m going to write a story like that. I tried once, but the characters took over and my girl (Jayne Blackthorne) refused to fall in love with my bad guy (Ben). That’s what I get, I guess, letting my characters run the story. But one day, I swear it, I’ll have a main character who is bold enough and tough enough, and yes, just that convincing enough to turn an evil guy into a man good enough to settle down with. I know. I’m crazy. And I’m okay with that, because guess what, y’all .... it’s fiction!
P.S. Gold star to any reader who can tell me what that book is titled, the high fantasy one I mentioned above. I’d love to read it again and maybe send the author some fan mail.
I published my first novel WRECKED on January 1, 2012 and have published on average a book a month since. I quit my jobs as a lawyer and teacher early in 2013 to focus full time on my writing, and I couldn’t be happier. I love my work and even more so, my readers! Please be sure to sign up for my newsletter so you can stay current with what’s going on in my world. Here are a few videos I’ve done answering reader questions; some of them are long, so grab a snack! Elle Casey’s Youtube channel. I also write under the pen name Kat Lee, and as her, wrote one chick-lit/romance novel called Full Measure.
Okay, more about me… I’ve been reading since I was 4 and have read probably over a couple thousand books in my lifetime. I love, love, love books!! I can’t tell you how many things I’ve not gotten done and chores I’ve ignored because I was too busy reading, and how many nights I’ve stayed up until the sun began to rise, finishing up a good book.
I don’t have much time for reading these days, what with all the writing I’ve been doing, but my favorite genres are fantasy, paranormal, sci fi dystopian, and romance of all types. I used to adore thriller and horror novels, though not so much anymore. When I was younger, Stephen King was my guy and I still admire him greatly as a writer.
Three years ago I threw all caution to the wind, checked out of corporate life, and moved the family to southern France where I now live with my husband, three children, two dogs, two horses, and several other furry creatures – surrounded by vineyards, ancient Roman ruins, and wonderful, warm people I am proud to call friends. I’ve renovated an old barn and purchased a vineyard — this is our first harvest year. My life is simply crazy.
So that’s me in a nutshell. The writer-me anyway. Thanks for coming to my website. Don’t forget to sign up for my newsletter and follow me on Twitter and Facebook. And please, if you like my books, tell your friends and family. Without you sharing my work, I would be nowhere in this writing business.
